An Austrian Airlines flight from Tel Aviv to Vienna made an emergency landing Sunday night in Sofia, Bulgaria, after a suspected bomb threat. The plane, carrying 51 passengers and six crew members, landed safely at 8:42 p.m., according to a statement from the Lufthansa Group, which owns the airline. Bulgaria’s BTA news agency reported that the flight crew received a bomb threat as the plane approached the Romanian border, prompting the diversion to the Bulgarian capital.

Following the incident, a post-flight inspection confirmed the plane posed “no danger,” allowing it to resume its original route. The airline confirmed there was “no danger” after a thorough search of the aircraft, passengers, and crew. The threat was reportedly made by an Austrian citizen not on the flight.

The incident comes less than three weeks after an Omani co-pilot attempted to take over a Flydubai jet carrying 174 people heading to Tel Aviv and crash it into Ben Gurion Airport. The co-pilot allegedly stabbed the captain before passengers and crew managed to overpower him. Two off-duty pilots on board helped land the plane safely in Tabuk, Saudi Arabia.

The attempted hijacking raised questions about how an Omani national came to serve as co-pilot on an Israel-bound flight, given that Oman does not have diplomatic relations with Israel. Later reports revealed the accused terrorist had been banned by Oman Air due to his “radical ideological views,” but was still hired by Flydubai.

The recent events highlight ongoing concerns about aviation security, particularly in light of threats from individuals with extremist backgrounds. While the bomb threat on the Austrian Airlines flight was resolved without incident, the Flydubai hijacking attempt underscores the need for stricter vetting processes for airline personnel.
