New DSA Members Warn Against Third Trump Impeachment

Two incoming Democratic Socialists of America (DSA) members, Melat Kiros and Darializa Avila Chevalier, have warned against pursuing a third impeachment of President Donald Trump, arguing that such a move could inadvertently benefit Republicans and undermine Democratic efforts.
Kiros, who recently won a Democratic primary in Colorado, and Chevalier, who unseated an establishment Democrat in New York, both expressed concerns that an impeachment effort could serve as a political talking point for Republicans rather than delivering meaningful accountability. Chevalier, a community organizer known for her primary victory, emphasized the need for strategic and effective measures to hold the Trump administration accountable.
Strategic Accountability Over Impeachment
“I support accountability, but my question is whether this will be meaningful,” Chevalier said in a Politico interview. “I want to make sure that any accountability process we engage in is one that actually holds his feet to the fire.” She suggested that Congress should focus on using its power of the purse and subpoena authority to investigate corporations profiting from Trump’s policies and end the Iran war.
Kiros, who also won a primary in Colorado, echoed these sentiments. While she acknowledged that Trump had committed impeachable offenses, she did not specify which ones. Instead, she called for holding those who helped elect Trump accountable, emphasizing the need to address corruption that directly impacts voters’ economic interests.
Transforming the Democratic Party
“We have a real opportunity to demonstrate as Democrats that not only are we going to hold the Trump administration accountable, we’re going to hold all the cronies that helped get him elected accountable,” Kiros said. Her campaign platform focuses on transforming the Democratic Party, and she believes the current moment is a chance to hold both Republicans and Democrats accountable for past actions.
Both lawmakers are part of a broader trend of progressive Democrats seeking to reshape the party’s direction. Their warnings against a third impeachment reflect a growing emphasis on economic and corporate accountability over political theatrics.
