A foreign national has been charged with illegally voting in the 2024 presidential election in Minnesota, according to the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) agents arrested Mukeshkumar Somabhai Chaudhari after he was charged with knowingly making a false claim of American citizenship to vote in the election.

DHS Stands Firm Against Illegal Voting

DHS Secretary Markwayne Mullin emphasized that the administration will not allow non-citizens to influence the election results. He stated, ‘Our message to aliens who vote in American elections is clear: we will find you, arrest you, and you will face the consequences, including criminal charges and deportation.’ Under President Trump’s leadership, the administration is committed to protecting the integrity of the electoral process by ensuring only American citizens elect leaders.

Charged With False Citizenship Claim

Last month, a federal grand jury in Minnesota indicted Chaudhari on two counts of making a false claim of citizenship to vote. Prosecutors allege that in November 2024, Chaudhari signed a voter signature certificate, swearing he was an American citizen. However, he is not a U.S. citizen and knew this when he signed the document.

Legal Consequences and Enforcement

ICE’s Travis Pickard noted that voting is reserved for U.S. citizens, and falsely claiming citizenship to cast a ballot is a serious crime. He added that Homeland Security Investigations has the authority and experience to investigate such cases and will continue working with law enforcement partners to protect election integrity. If convicted of both counts, Chaudhari could face up to ten years in prison.

Broader Implications for Election Security

The case highlights the ongoing efforts by federal agencies to combat voter fraud and ensure the legitimacy of the electoral process. With the 2024 election approaching, the focus on preventing illegal voting is intensifying, especially in states like Minnesota where immigration and voting laws are under scrutiny. This incident underscores the importance of strict enforcement of citizenship requirements for voting and the potential consequences for those who violate these laws.
