The U.S. Treasury Department has identified approximately $270 million in suspicious financial activity potentially linked to fraud targeting federal student aid programs. This revelation comes as the Trump administration continues its efforts to combat waste, fraud, and abuse in federal spending.
Fraud Schemes Targeting Student Aid
According to the Treasury’s Financial Crimes Enforcement Network (FinCEN), the suspicious activity was referred to federal investigators for further review. In July, FinCEN issued an alert to financial institutions about fraud rings creating ‘ghost students’ using stolen identities to enroll in colleges and universities, thereby siphoning student aid funds.
These schemes not only result in financial losses for federal student aid programs but also risk disenfranchising legitimate students by making it harder for them to enroll due to the presence of fraudulent enrollments.
Efforts to Recover Stolen Funds
Treasury Secretary Scott Bessent emphasized that the Trump administration will not tolerate criminals exploiting government programs for personal gain. Bessent stated, ‘Every dollar stolen from Federal student aid is a dollar taken from taxpayers and deserving students.’ He also highlighted that over the past year, Treasury returned $175 million in payments that would have gone to deceased individuals and expanded Do Not Pay access to 99 percent of federal programs.
Bessent further noted that fraud does not stop at U.S. borders, and the Treasury is sanctioning overseas scam networks and cartels that target elderly Americans. The agency is also making it easier for individuals with knowledge of fraud to report it by accepting confidential whistleblower tips and offering cash rewards.
Combating Fraud Across Borders
As part of its broader strategy, the administration is working with financial institutions and law enforcement to identify and recover stolen funds, while holding those responsible accountable. This effort is part of a larger initiative to ensure taxpayer money is protected and used effectively in federal programs.
