Christiane Amanpour, a longtime face of CNN, has announced her departure from the network after 43 years of service. The 68-year-old journalist, known for her extensive coverage of global events, will leave her daily CNN and PBS programs at the end of 2026, transition her CNN International show to a weekly format through May 2027, and fully exit by the end of June.

In a statement, Amanpour said, “After many months of thought and a few sleepless nights, I have decided to separate from CNN, my partner of 43 fantastic years!” She expressed her commitment to maintaining CNN’s history of independent journalism and thanked her colleagues for their support throughout her career.

Amanpour reflected on her extensive career, from covering the first Gulf War to the horrors of the Bosnian War, Rwanda, Afghanistan, Iran, Ukraine, and beyond. She emphasized the importance of teamwork and the camaraderie built with her field crews and show teams in uncovering the truth.

Amanpour has faced criticism over the years for her coverage of political and geopolitical issues, including her comments on Israel and Hamas in October 2025, where she suggested that Israeli hostages may have received better treatment than Palestinian civilians. In April 2026, she was criticized for equating her Gulf War press credential with Pete Hegseth’s combat service, drawing accusations of “stolen valor” from veterans.

Her career has also been marked by comparisons to historical events, such as likening the Trump presidency to the Nazis’ Kristallnacht in 2020, and her support for “necessary activism” against Trump in 2018. Critics have also pointed out her soft coverage of Iran’s regime and her framing of Western concerns about radical Islam or border issues in ways that align with progressive priorities.

Amanpour’s announcement comes as Paramount completes its acquisition of Warner Bros. Discovery, placing CNN under the control of the Ellison-led media conglomerate. This marks a significant shift for CNN, which has long faced criticism from President Trump and conservative audiences.
