Rep. Ilhan Omar’s (D-MN) husband, Tim Mynett, faces allegations of fraud after his co-owned California winery, eStCru, allegedly sold investors empty wine barrels as aging vintages. House Oversight Committee Chairman James Comer (R-KY) revealed the findings during a recent appearance on Fox News’ “Sunday Night in America.” Comer stated that the winery, which was once praised by the Wine Business trade publication, closed its doors in April amid mounting scrutiny of Omar’s financial disclosures.

Investigation Into Financial Disclosures

Comer’s committee investigation into Omar’s financial disclosures uncovered “huge discrepancies” in her paperwork, leading to potential grounds for a search warrant. The winery’s shutdown has been linked to fraud claims, according to press reports. Mynett and his business partner have denied any wrongdoing, calling the allegations false and defamatory.

Financial Discrepancies and Asset Valuation

Comer pressed Mynett in a February letter about how Omar’s stake in the business increased dramatically from $15,000 to $50,000 on her 2023 disclosure, and then to between $1 million and $5 million just a year later. In her 2024 filing, the couple’s total assets were listed between $6 million and $30 million. However, Omar’s 2025 disclosure drastically reduced their combined assets to no more than $125,000, with Mynett’s stakes in both businesses valued at zero.

Immigration and Citizenship Scrutiny

Homeland Security Investigations agents searched Omar’s Washington, D.C., home last week for immigration paperwork from her late father, who naturalized her in 2000. However, official records, including Minnesota’s Legislative Reference Library, listed her birth year as 1981, which would have made her an adult at the time. Her congressional staff requested a change to 1982 in May 2019, but a 2023 records search did not confirm her father’s naturalization.

Legal and Immigration Consequences

Investigators are also reportedly using DNA evidence to determine whether Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, Omar’s husband, is her biological brother. If fraud is proven, Omar could face denaturalization and deportation. Rep. Tom Emmer (R-MN) has called for her deportation if the claims hold up.
