President Donald Trump and cabinet officials gathered at the White House on Wednesday for a roundtable to discuss the administration’s progress in combating cybercrime. The event highlighted efforts to prevent financial losses, disrupt foreign scams, and tackle sexual extortion networks.
Federal Efforts Prevent $1.6 Billion in Losses
During the roundtable in the East Room, Trump emphasized the success of federal law enforcement in warning over 10,000 Americans about cyber threats and preventing at least $1.6 billion in losses this year. He also noted that nearly $1 billion in cyber currency tied to foreign scammers has been frozen, and over 500 fraudulent websites have been shut down.
Targeting Sexual Extortion Rackets
Trump underscored the administration’s focus on combating sexual extortion, a priority led by First Lady Melania Trump through the Take It Down Act. He described the issue as having devastated the lives of many young people and, in some cases, led to tragic outcomes such as suicide.
Executive Orders and National Security Memoranda
Trump highlighted his actions, including an executive order in March that directed an inter-agency approach to tackle predatory internet schemes and a national security memorandum in August that mobilized private sector resources to combat hackers and cybercriminals.
Public Awareness and Federal Response
He noted that nearly three in four U.S. adults have experienced internet scams, with Americans losing $20 billion last year to such schemes. Trump reiterated that the administration has mobilized the full force of the federal government to address this growing threat.
