James Gunn’s latest DC Universe film, Clayface, is facing mixed reviews and weak box office projections, raising concerns about its potential success. The movie, which has been described as a disappointment for fans, is currently tracking behind even the lowest-performing DC films from the past.

Weak Pre-Sales and Box Office Projections

According to recent reports, Clayface is lagging significantly in pre-sales compared to previous DC films. At this stage, its domestic pre-sales are 80% lower than those of Supergirl at a similar time in its release cycle. Even when compared to a more genre-specific film like Resident Evil, Clayface is still 66% behind, which suggests an expected opening weekend of around $20 million.

Some tracking data indicates that the film’s opening weekend could dip into the teens, which would be a major underperformance for a DC movie. This is especially concerning given the financial investment in the project, which is estimated to be around $100 million in production and promotion costs.

Competing with a Documentary Phenomenon

Further complicating Clayface‘s prospects is the release of You Can See Everything, a three-hour documentary about Elizabeth Holmes. The documentary has already grossed $21 million and is expanding to 2,655 theaters this weekend, which could potentially outperform Clayface in its second weekend.

Additionally, the film is competing with Ali G: Who Iz I?, a comedy starring Sacha Baron Cohen, which had initially been expected to earn between $6 million and $10 million. However, the film’s theatrical rollout has been significantly reduced, with only one weekend of release planned, raising questions about its commercial viability.

Questions About the Film’s Necessity

Despite the hype and marketing efforts, Clayface appears to be facing a lack of audience interest. Critics have given it a 77% fresh rating on Rotten Tomatoes, which is not a terrible score but also not enough to generate significant buzz. The film’s performance raises questions about whether there was ever a demand for a Clayface movie, especially in a market already saturated with DC films.
