Federal agents have arrested a 17-year-old Texas teenager for allegedly plotting to assassinate Republican Congressman Keith Self and carry out an ISIS attack, according to federal law enforcement sources. The FBI arrested the suspect on October 5 after he purchased a firearm, according to WFAA. The suspect remains in federal custody, and his name has not been publicly released.

The teenager had recently been radicalized and was under FBI monitoring. The FBI declined to comment, and Rep. Self’s office did not immediately respond to the Daily Caller News Foundation’s request for comment.

Rep. Self’s Political Stance on Sharia Law

Rep. Keith Self has a long history of opposing Sharia law and radical Islamist ideology in the United States. He introduced a non-binding resolution in September that would denounce Sharia law and oppose its implementation in the U.S. Self is also the co-founder of the Sharia-Free Caucus.

“Protecting our Constitutional Republic from radical Islam is getting messy,” Self told WFAA. “I served in the military for 25 years with the mindset that defending freedom was worth the sacrifice. Our elected leaders should govern with that same mindset.”

The Sharia-Free America Caucus remains committed to upholding the Constitution as the supreme law of the land while defending the freedoms and liberties upon which the United States was founded, according to Self.

When asked if his stances on Islamic extremism prompted the attack, Self said, “If it’s ISIS related, you kind of have to believe that. I can’t prove that. I don’t know that for sure. But you have to follow the [old saying] if it walks like a duck and quacks like a duck, it’s probably a duck.”
