Rep. investigation-against-her/”>Ilhan Omar (D-MN) has announced her intention to vacate her Washington, D.C., home, citing safety concerns following a federal raid on her residence. The raid, which occurred as part of an ongoing investigation into her citizenship status, has left her and her family feeling vulnerable, according to Omar.
Security Concerns and Threats
Omar made the announcement in her first televised interview since the raid, during which federal agents executed a search warrant and seized electronic devices and documents. She told MS Now host Chris Hayes, “Obviously, I can’t continue to live there.” She explained that the public nature of her address, combined with death threats, has made it unsafe for her and her children to remain in the home.
Raid Allegedly Aimed to Terrify
Omar claimed the raid was intended to scare her and her family, as well as to signal to Trump supporters that the administration was taking action against her. She described the early morning arrival of agents as an “urgent evacuation” situation, noting how it took time to determine what was happening.
Legal and Constitutional Concerns
Omar also expressed frustration over the process, stating that agents showed her the warrant and asked her to sign a document waiving her constitutional protections. She called the request “obnoxious” and questioned why she would be asked to sign such a document.
Political Context and Allegations
Omar claimed that former President Donald Trump had promised to take action against her for years, leading his supporters to question whether anything would ever happen. She suggested that the raid was a response to these long-standing promises and the growing frustration among Trump’s base.
Immigration Fraud Claims
Omar dismissed the efforts to investigate her past, suggesting that the claims were based on a “huge undertaking” to indict a 12-year-old for alleged immigration fraud. She joked that there were “a lot of smart 12-year-olds” who could have been involved in such a conspiracy.
Birth Date and Citizenship Questions
Despite her claims, questions remain about Omar’s actual birth date and whether she was naturalized through her father’s citizenship. A 2023 U.S. Citizenship and Immigration Services search failed to find evidence that her father had been naturalized as she stated.
