In July 2022, Dennis West, 71, was found dead in his Florida home during a welfare check. Weeks later, an officer from the Lauderhill Police Department allegedly orchestrated a scheme to take control of the home using West’s identity. Brian Louis Sguros, 35, was arrested on Tuesday for multiple felony charges, including official misconduct and misuse of a deceased person’s identification.
Identity Theft and Property Takeover
Sguros allegedly forged West’s signature to pay his taxes and utilities, and obtained approval to renovate the home under West’s name. Using his access to the police database, he gathered personal details about West, including his date of birth, driver’s license record, and Social Security number. The scheme was uncovered after West’s heirs sold the property to a real estate company, which encountered Sguros at the home, who handed over the keys before the company filed an unlawful detainer action.
False Claims and Legal Consequences
In sworn statements, Sguros claimed he took control of the house to prevent criminal activity and squatters. He also filed a complaint against the real estate company, stating he had owned the property since August 2022 and had spent at least $214,000 on repairs and improvements. After his arrest, Sguros was placed on administrative leave without pay and appeared in court, where he was ordered held on a $25,000 bond.
Legal and Ethical Violations
Authorities allege Sguros misrepresented his relationship with West, claiming to be his friend despite no evidence of prior acquaintance. The case highlights serious ethical and legal violations by a public official, raising questions about accountability and misuse of power within law enforcement.
