On Tuesday night, billionaire Philadelphia 76ers star LeBron James was caught on camera practicing his golf swing during the national anthem before a game against the New York Knicks at Madison Square Garden. The incident sparked immediate backlash, with President Donald Trump weighing in on Truth Social.
President Trump DUNKS on Lebron James for disrespecting the National Anthem in a Truth Social post:
“I said right from the beginning that heβs no good, a TOTAL DISGRACE,” Trump wrote. “LeBron James should apologize to all of those Great American Warriors and Heroes who died for the American Flag, and all that our Country stands for!”
James’ actions are part of a pattern of criticism toward America, despite his immense success within the country. In July 2022, he questioned why WNBA player Brittney Griner would want to return to the U.S. during her detention in Russia, prompting a sharp response from former NBA center Enes Kanter Freedom.
“You are free to leave buddy or you can even volunteer for an exchange for her,” Freedom posted on social media. “Some people literally have NO idea what is it like to live in a dictatorship. Keep taking your freedom for granted.”
LeBron has consistently criticized the U.S. while reaping its economic benefits. In January 2021, he criticized the nation’s response to the Capitol breach, claiming it looked like a “third-, fourth-, fifth-world country.” He omitted the fact that the country provided him with a platform to build a net worth of $1.4 billion, including a $153 million Lakers contract and a lifetime deal with Nike.
Off the court, James has faced criticism for his remarks about “stay-at-home women,” which drew outrage from parents who perform real labor without assistance. Despite his wealth and privilege, James continues to find ways to criticize the country he plays for.
