President Donald Trump secured a significant victory on Wednesday as Politico agreed to correct a story that falsely claimed White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles coordinated an interview between Fox News host Sean Hannity and former White House Press Secretary Katie Zacharia. The correction came after a 48-hour ultimatum from Trump’s legal team.

Politico Issues Correction Amid White House Pressure

Politico updated its report, acknowledging that the earlier version had mischaracterized Wiles’s role in the interview. The correction stated that Wiles did not play a direct role in setting up the interview. The incident marks another significant win for the Trump administration, which has been engaged in a contentious relationship with the media.

White House Counsel Accuses Politico of Defamation

William Scharf, Trump’s counsel, sent a letter to Politico’s editor-in-chief, Jonathan Greenberger, highlighting the inaccuracies in the outlet’s reporting. He accused Politico of publishing “sensational falsehoods” despite being provided with evidence that contradicted their claims. Scharf emphasized that the outlet had been presented with clear evidence of the inaccuracies and still chose to publish false information.

Historical Context of Trump’s Media Battles

This is not the first time Trump has successfully challenged mainstream media outlets. Last year, he reached a $16 million settlement with CBS parent company Paramount after the network’s deceptive editing of a Kamala Harris interview. In 2024, he also received a $15 million payout from ABC News following a lawsuit over false statements about his legal liability for rape.

Legal and Financial Implications

Most of the funds from these legal settlements will be used to fund Trump’s future presidential library, with the remainder covering legal fees. The White House’s ongoing disputes with media outlets have continued to be a focal point of its public relations strategy.
