Janette MacAusland, 49, has been indicted on two counts of first-degree murder for allegedly strangling her 6-year-old daughter, Ella, and 7-year-old son, Kai, in their Wellesley, Massachusetts home in April. Toxicology reports revealed the children had traces of sedative-like drugs in their systems, including zolpidem, acetaminophen, ibuprofen, and lorazepam, which may have contributed to their deaths.

Drug Use and Alleged Motives

The medical examiner’s report indicated that the children’s deaths were caused by mechanical asphyxia, combined with the effects of the substances. While some of the drugs were over-the-counter pain relievers, zolpidem (Ambien) and lorazepam (Ativan) are prescription medications used for sleep and anxiety. It remains unclear why the children were given these drugs, but one theory suggests MacAusland, an acupuncturist, may have attempted to reduce the emotional impact of the killings by sedating the children before strangling them.

Confession and Suicide Attempt

MacAusland allegedly confessed to the murders when police arrived at her aunt’s house in Bennington, Vermont. She told investigators she strangled the children and tried to kill herself, hoping they could all ‘go to God together but it didn’t work.’ She had a large gash on her throat and attempted suicide when authorities took her into custody. She also claimed she tried to jump from a bridge but couldn’t bring herself to do it.

Divorce and Legal Proceedings

MacAusland was going through a contentious divorce with the children’s father, who had filed for divorce in October 2025 seeking full custody of the children and control of the family home. She has entered pleas of not guilty to murder charges and is being held without bail. Her arraignment is scheduled for November 3.

Similar Cases and Trends

The case bears similarities to the 2023 trial of Lindsay Clancy, another Massachusetts mother accused of strangling her three children. Clancy’s case was labeled ‘Lindsay Clancy Social Contagion’ by some analysts, suggesting a possible trend of mothers committing filicide. While experts debate whether this is a real trend or simply a series of high-profile cases, the MacAusland case adds to the growing list of domestic violence-related crimes involving mothers and their children.
