Rep. Ilhan Omar appeared nervous and laughed awkwardly when asked about her marriage to her brother during an interview with Chris Hayes on Wednesday. The discussion centered around claims that she married her biological brother, Ahmed Nur Said Elmi, which were first reported by a Somali website, Somalispot.
Strange Response to Suggestive Questions
Hayes asked Omar about the man she married, inquiring when the claims first surfaced and why they were made. Omar responded with a nervous laugh, saying she was unsure of the answer and suggested the claims originated from a Somali blog. She claimed the blog was not reliable and that right-wing conspiracy theorists in Minneapolis picked up the story.
Omar continued by saying that some people were introduced to her brother by her, which she described as ‘insane.’ When asked if she was related to the man, she replied, ‘Not to my knowledge,’ which many interpreted as an attempt at sarcasm.
Broader Criminal Investigation
The conversation took place just days after a federal raid on Omar’s Washington, DC, home. The Department of Justice has obtained her DNA, which could be used to prove she married her brother to commit immigration fraud. However, the investigation is primarily focused on her naturalization fraud and financial crimes.
A recent court filing revealed that the search warrant for Omar’s home has not yet been fully executed. The warrant also identifies her by the name of her brother-husband, ‘Ilhan Nur Said Elmi,’ which is also known as ‘Ilhan Abdullahi Omar.’
As the investigation continues, Omar’s legal team has not commented on the recent developments, and the case remains under active review by federal authorities.
