Netflix has announced the largest layoffs in its company’s history, cutting approximately 1,000 employees, or about 6% of its 16,000-person workforce. This marks a significant shift in the streaming giant’s strategy as it grapples with declining stock prices and a saturated market.

In a company-wide memo, co-CEOs Ted Sarandos and Greg Peters outlined the decision, stating that organizational changes would result in the departure of roughly 6% of colleagues, with the most significant impact on product, tech, legal, and HR teams. The memo emphasized the need to be disciplined in prioritizing resources and people to fulfill Netflix’s mission of entertaining the world.

Netflix’s stock has fallen sharply over the past year, currently trading at $70.30, down 42% from its previous high of $121.00. Analysts attribute this decline to the widespread belief that the streaming industry has reached a ceiling in terms of new subscriber growth. Unlike other entertainment companies that benefit from alternative income streams such as theme parks, merchandising, and home video, Netflix relies almost entirely on subscriber revenue and its advertising tier.

Despite its profitability, Netflix is no longer seen as the rapidly growing phenomenon it once was. With a finite global audience, the company faces the challenge of boosting its stock price without expanding its customer base. The solution, according to industry observers, lies in cost-cutting measures, with artificial intelligence (AI) playing a central role in this transformation.

AI is expected to streamline operations by replacing roles that require repetitive tasks, such as paperwork, reporting, and administrative functions. Companies like Kroger are already implementing AI to reduce costs and improve efficiency, with plans to lay off 3,000 corporate employees over the next three years. The adoption of AI is seen as a necessary step for businesses to remain competitive in an evolving market.

As AI continues to reshape industries, its impact on entertainment and media is expected to grow. Some speculate that Netflix may eventually offer free access to its older content through a separate streaming service, similar to Pluto or Tubi, to generate additional advertising revenue.
