Ruaridh Mollica, the Scottish actor playing the bisexual character Tommy Maximoff in Disney-Marvel’s TV show VisionQuest, has expressed that it is an ‘honor’ to portray a bisexual character in the MCU. In an interview with Variety, Mollica highlighted the significance of the role in making him feel ‘seen’ and recognized for his identity.

Representation and Identity

Mollica emphasized that Marvel’s decision to cast a bisexual actor for the role was a positive step, and he feels it helps create visibility for the bisexual community. He noted that while Tommy Maximoff, his character, is not shown onscreen being attracted to other men, the character’s interactions, such as flirting with Lisa Molinari, make him feel more represented as a bisexual individual.

‘It’s not necessarily about who you’re dating, it’s about who you are inside, and who you want to flirt with,’ Mollica said. He hopes that his portrayal of Tommy will resonate with others and contribute to a sense of representation and inclusion.

Character Background

Mollica described Tommy as a ‘grifter’—a teenage hustler, pickpocket, and conman who roves the streets of London. He highlighted the character’s background as an orphan who has had to build his identity independently, noting the loneliness and yearning for family that define Tommy’s journey.

‘He’s an orphan. He not got anyone,’ Mollica said. He added that the character’s development is influenced by Matt Damon’s performance in the 1997 film Good Will Hunting, which he feels captures the essence of many male characters.

Current Projects and Career

Mollica is currently best known for his breakout role as Max Williamson in the 2024 film Sebastian, where he played an aspiring writer who moonlights as a male escort. His recent work continues to showcase his versatility and commitment to roles that challenge traditional narratives and promote representation.
