College football is embracing throwback fashion with bold, colorful uniforms and nostalgic themes that are capturing the attention of fans and students alike. Coastal Carolina University has taken the lead with its fluorescent, 1990s-themed jerseys for its upcoming home matchup against Appalachian State. The team’s annual event, dubbed ‘Wait Til You See This,’ has become a highlight of the season, blending pop culture with college football tradition.

Chance Miller, Coastal Carolina Athletic Director, noted the popularity of the initiative, stating, “If you look at [the conversation] online right now… some people hate the jerseys, some people love it, but they’re all talking about our university, our football team, and our uniforms.” The creative concept was developed by Chief Creative Officer Jake Johnson and Patrick Osborne, Executive Associate Athletic Director for External Communications, aiming to engage the campus community in a fun and unique way.

The 1990s comeback in pop culture inspired the team to create a decade-themed look, drawing influence from classic TV sitcoms like Saved By The Bell, Friends, and The Fresh Prince of Bel-Air. The event also includes in-stadium videos boards with a VHS-style look and feel, along with ’90s music played throughout the stadium. This effort is expected to provide broader brand exposure for both the football team and the university.

Miller explained the deeper motivation behind the initiative, noting that the team is trying to attract fans from the Northeast and Midwest who may not have had traditional college football fandom. “We’re trying to get them to come to the games, buy tickets, and really adopt us,” he said. The team’s sights are already set on 2027, with plans for another creative splash that could spark comparisons to fast food chains or disposable cup designs.

Meanwhile, Cal football has also embraced nostalgia with a Grateful Dead-inspired helmet for its upcoming game against Wake Forest. The design honors the band’s deep local roots and historic connection to the UC Berkeley campus, with over 1,000 concerts played on or near campus since 1966.

Jason Hobar, Cal Athletics Chief Marketing Officer, stated, “Since 1966, the legendary group has played more concerts on or near campus than at any other university in the United States, cementing Berkeley as a true home for their music.” The helmet will be worn for the first and only time ever in this matchup.

If you’re a self-proclaimed Deadhead or Golden Bear fan, now might be a good time to add a little tie-dye to your wardrobe. The trend of throwback fashion in college football is clearly on the rise, with teams finding new and creative ways to connect with fans while celebrating the past.
