Michael Wilbon, the legendary co-host of the long-running ESPN sports show ‘Pardon the Interruption,’ has announced his sudden departure from the network. Wilbon, who has been a fixture on the show alongside his longtime friend and co-host Tony Kornheiser for 25 years, cited recent struggles with multiple health issues as the reason for his exit.
Wilbon revealed that he has taken an indefinite leave of absence from ‘Pardon the Interruption’ and his NBA hosting duties at ESPN and ABC. His last appearance on the show was on October 26. In a statement, Wilbon described his situation as ‘a trip to the injured list,’ emphasizing that it is not retirement but rather a necessary step for his well-being.
‘Probably I should have listened to medical professionals and people closest to me, yep, Kornheiser included, who saw worrisome signs in recent years that suggested I take time away earlier,’ Wilbon said. ‘But I didn’t.’
Wilbon clarified that his health issues are not related to alcohol use or gambling, which he referred to as ‘winds of change I find loathsome.’ This statement appears to be a reference to the growing presence of online sports betting in recent years.
‘Pardon the Interruption,’ a fast-paced show known for its energetic banter and analysis of sports stories, was first conceived by ESPN producer Erik Rydholm. Wilbon and Kornheiser, both former Washington Post columnists, were chosen as hosts because of their history of arguing in the newspaper’s office.
‘I have loved sparring and hosting PTI with Tony every single day these past 25 years,’ Wilbon said. ‘And I’m incredibly grateful for the support and encouragement of my colleagues as I take this time away to concentrate on me, specifically on my well-being. I have no idea exactly how this part of my journey will wind up. The goal is to come out of it feeling much better than I do now and ready to return to sparring with Tony.’
