Several international flights across Europe were grounded or rerouted after being subjected to a series of bomb threats, according to recent reports. Over the past 24 hours, eight flights received what appear to be fake bomb threats, sparking speculation about a potential coordinated effort to disrupt air traffic.
In all instances, the aircraft were landed, evacuated, and searched by police and bomb disposal teams. Despite the extensive investigations, no explosives were found on any of the planes. The incidents have raised concerns about the safety and security of air travel in the region.
Flights Affected Across Multiple European Capitals
The Polish capital, Warsaw, was among the hardest hit, with two flights affected. One was a Boeing 737 MAX operated by LOT, the national carrier, flying from London, and another was a SAS flight from Copenhagen. Bulgaria’s capital, Sofia, also experienced two bomb threat incidents, both involving Wizzair flights from Milan Bergamo and Dublin.
Rome was also impacted, with two Ryanair flights from Dublin and Lisbon being investigated after bomb threats were reported. A seventh flight, departing from Manchester, England, was diverted to Murcia airport in Spain for further checks. Additionally, a Wizzair flight from London to Sofia was diverted to Budapest, Hungary, for investigation.
Email Threats and Ongoing Investigations
According to the information released by the airports and national governments involved, in at least some of the cases, the bomb threats were made via email. However, no information has been made public about the potential culprits behind the threats. Authorities continue to investigate the incidents to determine the source and motive behind the fake bomb threats.
The incidents have prompted a broader discussion about the security measures in place for air travel and the need for improved protocols to handle such threats. While no explosives were found, the disruption has caused significant delays and raised questions about the effectiveness of current safety systems.
