Week 3 of the NFL season brought a stark reminder of the ‘Super Bowl hangover’ for both the New England Patriots and Seattle Seahawks, as both teams faced crushing defeats following their respective Super Bowl victories last year.
Patriots’ Struggles Continue
The Patriots, led by young quarterback Drake Maye, were outmatched by the Jacksonville Jaguars in a 35-6 rout. Maye’s performance was lackluster, finishing with 199 yards, two interceptions, and a lost fumble, marking his second three-turnover game in three weeks. The Jaguars dominated the game so thoroughly that they opted to run out the clock with nearly nine minutes remaining in the fourth quarter, with quarterback Trevor Lawrence choosing to give himself up on the one-yard line rather than take a sure touchdown.
Seahawks Fall to Commanders
Seattle’s performance was equally disappointing as they fell 33-31 to the winless Washington Commanders. Despite the absence of starting quarterback Jayden Daniels, the Seahawks struggled to keep pace, with Marcus Mariota stepping in and delivering three passing touchdowns and a game-sealing first-down run. Meanwhile, Sam Darnold, in his return, threw for four touchdowns but also two interceptions, including a late pick-six that shifted momentum to Washington.
Coaches Unhappy with Results
Head coach Mike Vrabel was clearly frustrated with the Patriots’ 1-2 start, while the Seahawks will look to rebound in their next matchup against the Los Angeles Chargers. Both teams face tough challenges ahead, with the Patriots set to take on the undefeated Buffalo Bills and the Seahawks preparing to face the Chargers in an attempt to secure their first win of the season.
