Jim Bakker, the disgraced televangelist who built a TV empire alongside his first wife, Tammy Faye, has died at the age of 86, his widow announced on Monday. Lori Bakker shared the news on the Facebook page of ‘The Jim Bakker Show,’ expressing her grief and honoring her late husband’s legacy.
A Pioneer of Christian Television
Bakker is best known for co-founding the popular ‘PTL [Praise the Lord] Club’ with Tammy Faye, which became a cornerstone of Christian television in the 1970s and 1980s. However, his public image was irreparably damaged by a sex scandal and financial crimes that led to his imprisonment.
The scandal erupted in 1987 when it was revealed that Bakker had sent $265,000 in hush money to a church secretary, Jessica Hahn, who claimed he raped her. Bakker admitted to having sex with her but maintained it was consensual. Following the scandal, he stepped down from ‘PTL’ and handed the ministry over to Jerry Falwell.
Legal Troubles and Redemption
Bakker was later indicted for mail fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy after an investigation into the finances of his ministry. He was sentenced to 45 years in prison, which was later reduced to eight years. He served five years before being paroled in 1994. He and Tammy Faye divorced in 1992 after 31 years of marriage.
After his release, Bakker worked at the Los Angeles Dream Center and met his second wife, Lori. They adopted five children and launched a new TV ministry, ‘The Jim Bakker Show.’ However, Bakker faced further legal trouble when he peddled a so-called ‘silver solution’ for COVID-19, leading to a civil settlement of $156,000 in refunds.
A Legacy of Faith and Controversy
Lori Bakker reflected on her husband’s life, emphasizing his dedication to the Gospel and his deep love for people and ministry. She shared that even in his final days, Bakker’s heart was for the work of God. Her family is grieving and requests privacy during this time, expressing that Jim’s legacy will never be forgotten.
