A communications firm representing AI safety advocates is linked to Jacob Coxon’s media campaign, raising questions about coordination.

A communications firm representing leading AI safety advocates is being scrutinized for its role in promoting Jacob Coxon, a former Anthropic researcher who sparked global debate about AI risks. According to a recent report, DEY. Ideas + Influence, which represents prominent figures in AI safety, was actively booking media appearances for Coxon after he resigned and warned publicly about the potential of AI to lead to an apocalypse.
Media Coordination Raises Questions
The report highlights the unusual coordination behind Coxon’s media rollout, especially after he denied having outside help during a Fox News interview. Sources indicate that DEY. was pitching Coxon for interviews around the same time it was arranging appearances for Nate Soares, president of the Machine Intelligence Research Institute (MIRI). Neither Coxon nor DEY. responded to requests for comment.
Coxon’s Rapid Rise to Prominence
Coxon, a British-born researcher who previously worked at OpenAI and Anthropic, became a national figure after a Wall Street Journal interview on September 8. He followed this with a viral X thread warning that AI labs were racing toward self-improving superintelligence, a claim that garnered over 174 million views. Despite having fewer than 100 followers on X, the message was amplified by prominent AI safety accounts.
Industry Scrutiny and Public Debate
Coxon’s rapid rise to fame drew scrutiny from tech figures, including Elon Musk, who questioned how someone with only a few months at Anthropic could secure a Wall Street Journal profile and TV appearances so quickly. DEY. describes itself as a firm for artists, scientists, dissidents, and dreamers, but its client list includes some of the most prominent AI safety advocates, such as Eliezer Yudkowsky and Timnit Gebru.
Shaping the AI Risk Narrative
The report raises concerns about how professional communications firms are influencing the public debate on AI risk, especially as legislators in Washington consider new regulations. DEY. also represents the Stanford Institute for Human-Centered AI, along with organizations like the Open Society Foundations, the Ford Foundation, and the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation.
