Gen Z's Beauty Obsession: GLP-1s and the Rise of a New Danger

2 min read

GLP-1s are becoming the new beauty standard for young women, replacing lip fillers as the latest obsession. While lip fillers once served as a symbol of wealth and status, the current trend centers around weight loss through these medications, raising serious health and social concerns.

The Shift from Lip Fillers to GLP-1s

For a decade, lip fillers were the go-to for women seeking to project wealth and social status. However, as the 2000s aesthetic of thinness, reminiscent of 1990s heroin chic, resurfaces, Gen Z is embracing a new pursuit: extreme thinness. This shift has led many young women to turn to GLP-1s, a class of drugs originally developed for diabetes management but now widely used for weight loss.

GLP-1s and the Social Pressure of Thinness

Young women on college campuses are increasingly using GLP-1s to achieve thinness, hoping to gain popularity, secure relationships, and access to elite social circles. These medications can lead to weight loss of 15-25% within a year, but their use is often accompanied by disordered eating behaviors and risky choices, such as using cocaine alongside the drugs.

Health Risks and Long-Term Concerns

Clinicians have raised alarms about the potential for GLP-1s to exacerbate eating disorders and create new forms of disordered eating. The long-term side effects of these drugs are still largely unknown, with reported risks including nausea, vomiting, stomach paralysis, intestinal obstruction, brain injury, and vision loss. Over 4,000 lawsuits have been filed against manufacturers, citing inadequate warnings about the drugs’ dangers.

Access and Misuse of GLP-1s

Many young women obtain GLP-1s through unregulated channels such as telehealth companies, WhatsApp groups, and foreign suppliers, often without proper medical oversight. This lack of guidance increases the risk of misuse and improper use of the medication.

Beauty Standards and the Pressure to Conform

Young women face immense social pressure to conform to unrealistic beauty standards, often driven by the influence of influencers and social media. The pursuit of thinness is framed as a way to compete with high-status individuals, leading some to risk their health for perceived social advantages.

Recommendations for Young Women

For those struggling with body image or disordered eating, seeking professional mental health support is crucial. While the pursuit of beauty may be tempting, it’s important to prioritize long-term health and well-being over short-term gains. Beauty standards are inherently unattainable, and true confidence comes from self-acceptance rather than conformity to unrealistic ideals.
