A new Gallup poll has revealed that American confidence in the value of a college education has plummeted to a record low, with only 31% of respondents now considering a college degree ‘very important’—a sharp decline from 70% in 2013.
The survey, which has tracked public opinion on the importance of higher education since 1978, found that the perception of college’s value has steadily eroded over the past 13 years. The percentage of Americans who believe a college education is ‘not too important’ has risen from 6% in 2013 to 29% today, signaling a growing skepticism about the institution’s role in society.
Demographic Trends Show Broad Decline
Gallup noted that the decline is consistent across all demographics, even among groups that have historically placed greater value on higher education. For instance, in 2019, majorities of women, middle-aged and older adults, Democrats, Black and Hispanic adults, and college graduates all considered college very important. However, each of these groups has experienced a double-digit decline in their support for college education in recent years.
Despite these trends, the majority of parents still hope their children will pursue a college degree after high school, indicating a lingering belief in its long-term benefits.
Costs and Confidence Concerns
Gallup speculated that the rising costs of higher education have played a significant role in the decline in public confidence. A separate Gallup poll found that only 12% of respondents believe a college degree is affordable, further fueling doubts about its accessibility and value.
Confidence in higher education as an institution has also waned, with only 38% of Americans expressing a ‘great deal’ or ‘quite a lot’ of confidence in colleges and universities. This is a drop from 42% the previous year, reflecting a broader trend of disillusionment with the sector.
While the data highlights a significant shift in public perception, it does not negate the continued importance of higher education for many families and individuals. The challenge now lies in addressing the concerns that have led to this decline and finding ways to make college more accessible and relevant to today’s students.
