President Donald Trump has announced the creation of the ‘Super Intelligence Force’ (SIF), a new government initiative aimed at overseeing artificial intelligence (AI) development, with Director of National Intelligence Jay Clayton named as its head. The announcement was made on Sunday following meetings with top AI company executives and the signing of voluntary safety standards.
Formation of the Super Intelligence Force
The SIF will operate alongside federal agencies and is part of what Trump called the ‘Historic White House Accord on Super Intelligence.’ During this gathering, leaders from major AI firms such as OpenAI, Anthropic, Google, Meta, Nvidia, and SpaceX signed a set of voluntary safety standards designed to govern AI development. These standards include four layers of controls and audits to ensure AI models function as intended.
Trump emphasized the importance of industry self-regulation, stating that he is seeing ‘tremendous self-policing’ from tech companies. The voluntary standards, which were shared on Truth Social, outline commitments from the companies, including regular meetings to develop safety protocols for AI systems.
Leadership of the Super Intelligence Force
Clayton, who has been identified as the likely choice for an AI oversight role, will lead the SIF with three additional officials. Andrew Ferguson, chairman of the FTC; Emil Michael, under secretary for research and engineering and chief technology officer at the Pentagon; and Scott Kupor, director of the Office of Personnel Management, will all report directly to Trump and White House Chief of Staff Susie Wiles.
The initiative comes amid growing public pressure for regulatory oversight of AI technology. Trump has been vocal about the need for American companies to take responsibility for their AI advancements, calling for a balance between innovation and accountability.
Industry Self-Regulation and Global Implications
While the tech industry has committed to self-regulation, some analysts argue that these efforts may be driven by the desire to avoid antitrust scrutiny rather than genuine altruism. The race for AI dominance is increasingly seen as a global competition, with China also vying for control over the technology.
