Christa Pike, a 50-year-old death row inmate, has released her first public statement since a botched execution attempt last month. Pike was originally sentenced to death for the 1995 murder, torture, and beating of 19-year-old Colleen Slemmer. After surviving two doses of pentobarbital, she was transported back to prison earlier this month, where she has continued to recover.

Tennessee Governor Bill Lee confirmed on Wednesday that Pike’s death sentence remains unchanged following the failed lethal injection. “As it related to a particular individual like Christa Pike and her crime, she’s still incarcerated under the laws of the State of Tennessee,” Lee stated. “I suspect her sentence will be the same as before unless determined otherwise by the courts.”

Physical and Emotional Pain

In a written statement released on Friday, Pike detailed the physical and emotional toll of her experience. “There hasn’t been a moment since that night when I haven’t been in pain. My body hurts. My arms hurt. My hands hurt. My throat hurts. I still struggle to speak,” she said. “And the pain isn’t just physical. There is pain in my mind and in my soul.”

Pike also expressed frustration over her isolation in the prison’s medical ward. “Since that night, I have been largely isolated in the prison’s medical ward, away from other people and the human connections that mean so much to me,” she said. “That isolation brings its own kind of pain. I spent 28 years in solitary confinement and much of what I am experiencing today is a repeat of that condition.”

“I had not contemplated life beyond that night and I’m deeply hurt by the incompetence that has put so many people in this terrible position,” Pike added.
