Ryan O’Shea, a 21-year-old college hockey player, was killed in a head-on collision with a Mexican illegal immigrant driving the wrong way on October 16. The crash occurred as O’Shea was returning to his campus after a hockey game, according to U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE).

Guillermo Carmona-Lopez, 31, was driving his pickup truck the wrong way on the road when he struck O’Shea, according to ICE. Carmona-Lopez had previously entered the U.S. illegally in May 2013 and was arrested by Border Patrol before reentering the country illegally. The incident is described as ‘tragic and preventable’ by ICE.

O’Shea was pronounced dead at the scene, according to Border Hawk News. Carmona-Lopez was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment of life-threatening injuries. Three other individuals involved in the crash sustained minor injuries.

O’Shea was pursuing a degree in criminal justice and aspired to join the New York City Police Department, according to ICE. His family expressed profound grief over his loss, calling it an ‘unimaginable’ and ‘preventable’ tragedy.

“My little brother is gone from this world; it has been absolutely devastating, and we are still in shock,” Kiera O’Shea, Ryan O’Shea’s sister, said, according to WTNH News 8. “He was my number one cheerleader, and he always had so much love to share to his family and friends, his girlfriend, his fraternity and all his hockey teammates.” Kiera described Ryan as one of the funniest, happiest, and happy-go-lucky people in the world.

As of this writing, Carmona-Lopez has not been charged, and the investigation remains ongoing. ICE posted a statement on X, emphasizing the ‘why’ behind their work, stating, “His family joins the many American families who have been left with unimaginable loss. Loss that was preventable.”
