Kansas Democratic Senator-elect Adam Hamilton has called on his party to avoid spending the next two years investigating former President Donald Trump, instead urging lawmakers to prioritize lowering the cost of living for American families.

Appearing on NBC’s Meet the Press on Sunday, Hamilton, who flipped the deeply red state of Kansas in last week’s midterm elections, expressed disappointment at the prospect of his first two Senate years being dominated by Trump-related investigations.

“I would be deeply disappointed if my first two years in the Senate were dominated by investigations into the Trump administration,” Hamilton said. “The bigger priority for me, and I think for most people in America, especially people living paycheck to paycheck, is ‘please help us with the cost of living,’” he added.

Hamilton also called for the incoming Democratic-controlled Congress to focus on ending the war with Iran and reversing Trump’s tariff policies. “If I spent the next two years, my first two years in the Senate, in investigations, I’d be deeply disappointed,” he continued. “I want to get to work helping the people in my state and helping the people across the country.”

His remarks come as Democrats prepare to take control of both chambers of Congress following their sweeping midterm victories. Several prominent Democrats have already made clear that they will begin their lawfare campaign on day one of the next Congress.

Senate Minority Leader Chuck Schumer declared Wednesday that Democrats would launch investigations and pursue legal action at the earliest possible opportunity. The top Democrat on the House Oversight Committee, Robert Garcia, has told the administration to “lawyer up.”

Hamilton, however, warned that Democrats risk squandering their electoral gains if they fail to focus on what really matters. “Let’s focus on helping the American people,” he said. “And I’ll tell you, the Democrats, if they don’t, if we don’t figure that out and get to work on helping people, this is going to be a one and done, kind of, you know, kind of blue wave.”
