House Minority Leader Hakeem Jeffries (D-NY) has vowed not to cooperate with Stephen Miller, the newly appointed White House chief of staff under President Trump, calling the move an ‘awful choice.’ Jeffries, who is set to become Speaker of the House in January, said Miller’s promotion following the midterm elections rules out any potential collaboration with the Trump administration.

On ABC’s ‘This Week,’ Jeffries criticized Miller’s appointment, stating that his ‘extremism’ makes cooperation impossible. ‘There’s not going to be any opportunity, certainly, to work with Stephen Miller and what he represents,’ Jeffries said. ‘We’re committed to forcefully pushing back against the extremism that they may try to continue to unleash on the American people.’

Jeffries also noted that his communication with Susie Wiles, Trump’s former chief of staff, will not continue with Miller. The Democrat leader emphasized that Democrats have ‘a firewall in the House and a firewall in the Senate, thanks to the American people,’ which he used to justify his stance against Miller.

Jeffries also blamed Miller for the deaths of Alex Pretti and Renee Good, two protesters killed by federal agents in Minneapolis last January. ‘Stephen Miller is the architect of Donald Trump’s violent mass deportation machine,’ Jeffries said. ‘He has unleashed billions of taxpayer dollars to brutalize and kill American citizens like Alex Pretti and Renee Nicole Good, and at the same time to violently target law-abiding immigrant families and communities all across the country.’

Jeffries criticized Miller immediately after his promotion, calling him a ‘dangerous xenophobe and reckless extremist who has American blood on his hands.’ He urged the administration to ‘fire him today.’ Earlier this year, after Jeffries called Miller a ‘hateful bigot,’ White House spokeswoman Abigail Jackson dismissed his comments, calling him a ‘buffoon.’
