Democrat Richard Ojeda, who recently defeated Republican Rep. Richard Hudson in North Carolina’s 9th Congressional District, has sparked controversy with his blunt remarks about President Donald Trump’s deputy chief of staff, Stephen Miller. Ojeda, a retired Army veteran, said he would be ‘happy to go to jail’ for physically assaulting Miller, calling him a ‘friggin’ worm.’
Threats Against Political Figures
During a campaign event, Ojeda told supporters, ‘Stephen Miller needs to be thumped. That guy’s a friggin’ worm.’ He further stated, ‘I would be willing to go to jail for. I mean, how much would I get for just cracking him a couple times?’ Ojeda also claimed he would be ‘more than happy to find myself in an elevator with him, and I’d whoop his ass from the first floor to the fifth floor, and be happy to go to jail.’
Political Anger and Campaign Focus
Throughout his campaign, Ojeda emphasized his frustration with political leaders, particularly highlighting issues of childhood poverty in West Virginia and the plight of coal miners. In a campaign advertisement, he stated, ‘People say that I’m angry. Well, angry is an understatement.’ He added, ‘When I come home and I find that I got children in my backyard that have it worse than the kids that I saw in Iraq and Afghanistan, I can’t accept that.’
The ad also referenced a 2012 Public News Service report titled ‘STUDY FINDS TOO MANY WV KIDS GROWING UP IN POVERTY.’ Ojeda criticized political figures like Nancy Pelosi and Mitch McConnell, saying, ‘We’ve been sold out by people like Nancy Pelosi, Mitch McConnell, and the Washington Insiders.’
Victory and Political Shift
Ojeda’s victory marked a significant shift in the political landscape, as he defeated Hudson, the chairman of the National Republican Congressional Committee (NRCC), in a district that had been held by Republicans since 1963. According to the Associated Press, Ojeda received 138,707 votes, or 51.1 percent, compared to Hudson’s 132,692 votes, or 48.9 percent.
In a post on X, Ojeda celebrated the defeat, stating, ‘WE JUST UNSEATED THE CHAIR OF THE NRCC. IT’S A NEW DAY IN AMERICA.’
