With Democrats securing control of Congress, the focus has shifted to aggressive investigations into the Trump administration, particularly within the Department of Homeland Security (DHS). Lawmakers have already begun outlining plans to scrutinize officials, signaling a new era of political accountability.
Committees Set to Launch Investigations
Senate Homeland Security and Governmental Affairs Committee Chair Sen. Maggie Hassan (D-NH) has already started preparing for the upcoming investigations, with job postings for anti-corruption counsel and investigators. The roles require expertise in federal conflict-of-interest laws, financial disclosures, and foreign influence rules. These postings reflect the committee’s intent to probe for corruption and misconduct within DHS.
Similarly, the House Oversight and Government Reform Committee, led by Chair Robert Garcia (D-CA), has issued a direct message to Trump officials: “Lawyer up.” The committee is expected to take a hard line in its investigations, with multiple members already making public statements about the need for accountability.
Political Posturing and Legal Threats
The push for investigations began on election night, when Sen. Hassan mocked former DHS Secretary Kristi Noem for her comments on the Trump administration’s performance. Hassan’s post, which included a sarcastic challenge, was followed by a public call for Noem to be held accountable under oath.
Rep. Delia Ramirez (D-IL), a key member of the House Homeland Security Committee’s cybersecurity panel, also joined the fray, listing several Trump officials for scrutiny. Her post, “Noem, Markwayne, Miller, Homan, Bovino, what’s up? Clear your schedule,” highlighted the committee’s intent to probe these individuals for potential wrongdoing.
Formal Demands for Document Preservation
Following the election, the House Homeland Security Committee’s ranking member, Bennie Thompson (D-MS), sent a letter to Markwayne Mullin, the former DHS Secretary, demanding that he preserve all documents relevant to pending investigations. Thompson, who is set to become the committee’s chairman in 2027, has made it clear that any violations of the law will not go unanswered.
Democratic members have also made public statements on social media, vowing to hold officials accountable if they broke the law for personal gain. The message is clear: the new Congress is ready to scrutinize the previous administration with rigor.
