Eight transgender or nonbinary Democrats have won legislative races across the United States, marking a significant shift in political representation. The victories occurred in key states including Alabama, Montana, Georgia, and Delaware, with seven candidates securing statehouse seats and one retaining a congressional position.
Historic Wins Across Multiple States
Allison Montgomery became Alabama’s first openly transgender lawmaker after defeating Republican Phillip Rigsby in House District 25. Montgomery received 53.2% of the vote, while Rigsby garnered 46.7%. In Georgia, Bentley Hudgins, the state’s first openly transgender and nonbinary legislator, won House District 90 with 92.5% of the vote, defeating Republican Samantha Boston.
Montana’s Zooey Zephyr secured a second term in House District 95 without an opponent, receiving 100% of the vote. In Washington, Jaelynn Scott became the state’s first openly transgender woman elected to the legislature, winning 87.2% of the vote. Joanna Whaley of Michigan also made history by defeating Republican Ron Kokinda with 62.5% of the vote.
Continued Progress in Representation
Leigh Finke retained Minnesota House District 66A with 85.3% of the vote, while Dina Nina Martinez-Rutherford won an open Assembly seat in Wisconsin with 92.5% of the vote. Delaware Rep. Sarah McBride, the first openly transgender member of Congress, secured another term with 64.3% of the vote.
These victories come amid ongoing debates over gender identity policies, parental rights, and school curricula. A Pew Research Center analysis found that 73% of Americans expressed discomfort with transgender athletes competing on teams that do not match their sex at birth, with a significant portion of both Republicans and Democrats holding this view.
Public Opinion and Policy Debates
The same survey revealed that 66% of Americans support requiring transgender athletes to compete according to their sex at birth, up from 2022. Additionally, 49% supported prohibiting public elementary schools from teaching about gender identity, while 56% backed protections against discrimination for transgender individuals in employment, housing, and public spaces.
