Secretary of Defense Pete Hegseth is not being considered for the Tennessee Senate seat, according to sources close to incoming Republican Gov. Marsha Blackburn. The seat, which will open after Blackburn’s transition to the governorship, is not on the radar for Hegseth, who remains in his current role within the Trump administration.

Washington Spin and Transition Focus

A source close to Blackburn reportedly told Punchbowl News reporter Jake Sherman that the focus is on the transition, not on baseless speculation about Hegseth’s potential candidacy. The source emphasized that the Blackburn team is not entertaining such rumors, calling them nothing more than Washington, D.C., spin from consultants with nothing better to do.

“D.C. won’t pick the next senator,” the source added, highlighting the local control over the Senate seat.

Trump’s Consideration of Hegseth’s Fate

Meanwhile, sources close to the White House have indicated that President Donald Trump is discussing the possibility of firing Hegseth, following the Democrats’ sweeping victories in the midterms. However, Trump has publicly denied these reports, stating that Hegseth is “doing a very good job.” White House spokeswoman Anna Kelly echoed this sentiment, saying the president has “full confidence” in Hegseth.

Despite the public denial, some White House aides are suggesting that part of the blame for the midterm losses could be placed on military officials, including Adm. Brad Cooper and Gen. Dan Caine, who were involved in the Iran war strategy. However, it remains unclear whether Trump has fully decided to replace Hegseth.

Impeachment Risks and Political Climate

CBS News reported that some sources believe Democrats may increase their efforts to impeach Hegseth, especially with their strong majorities in both chambers. This potential threat adds to the political uncertainty surrounding Hegseth’s position in the administration.

As the political landscape continues to shift, the focus remains on the transition in Tennessee and the broader implications of the midterms for the Trump administration’s future strategy.
