Fox News has hired Melissa DeRosa, a former top aide to New York Governor Andrew Cuomo, who previously admitted to covering up nursing home deaths during the COVID-19 pandemic. DeRosa will join Fox as a contributor and co-host of a new podcast, ‘The Girls,’ set to debut on October 1.
DeRosa’s Past Role and Admission of Cover-Up
DeRosa resigned from Cuomo’s administration in August 2021 amid allegations of sexual harassment. Earlier that year, she admitted on a conference call with Democratic lawmakers that the Cuomo administration had concealed the true number of nursing home deaths during the pandemic to avoid political fallout from then-President Donald Trump, who could have used the Department of Justice to investigate.
DeRosa stated that Trump’s public criticism of state leaders over nursing home deaths made the administration wary of releasing accurate data. She also apologized to lawmakers for putting them in a difficult political position, acknowledging the unfairness of the situation.
Previous Reports of Death Undercounting
The Daily Caller News Foundation previously reported that New York omitted an unknown number of coronavirus deaths in nursing homes. A 2021 report from the New York State Assembly found that Cuomo had personally edited Department of Health numbers to undercount deaths by thousands, with the government reporting 6,500 deaths instead of the actual 10,000.
DeRosa’s Political Criticisms
DeRosa has frequently criticized left-wing Democrats and compared candidates aligned with the Democratic Socialists of America, including New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani, calling them ‘parasites.’ She has also criticized Mamdani for his delayed condemnation of an antisemitic attack on a synagogue in Jackson, Mississippi.
DeRosa has also expressed concerns about the Democratic Party’s stance on Israel, accusing some members of the party of being too lenient on antisemitism and supporting groups like Hamas.
