Former NFL running back Todd Gurley joined President Donald Trump at a rally in Dalton, Georgia, on Friday as part of the president’s efforts to mobilize voters ahead of the midterm elections. Gurley traveled with Trump aboard Air Force One and was invited on stage during the event, where the president praised the athlete’s achievements.

“Well, he was the NFL Rookie of the Year. He was the NFL Offensive Player of the Year. He led the NFL in rushing touchdowns, and was the youngest player in NFL history to reach 50 career touchdowns. That means he is a good player,” Trump said.

Gurley, who played for the Georgia Bulldogs in college before joining the NFL, greeted the crowd with a “Go Dawgs!” and thanked Trump for the experience of being on Air Force One and visiting the White House.

“[I] want to thank President Trump today for the experience: being on Air Force One, welcoming me into the White House. Thank you so much. Thank you to the state of Georgia for everything y’all done to me and go Dawgs,” Gurley said.

Trump’s Athlete Campaigning Strategy

Gurley is the latest in a series of legendary athletes Trump has enlisted to campaign with as part of his broader strategy to support Republican candidates in the midterms. The president has also partnered with figures like Roger Clemens, Mike Tyson, John Gruden, and Floyd Mayweather in various states.

During the rally, Trump urged Georgians to vote for Republican Senate candidate Mike Collins and gubernatorial candidate Rick Jackson, emphasizing the importance of the upcoming elections.

“It’s time to fire John Ossoff and elect Mike Collins, one of the most respected men in Washington,” Trump said before inviting Collins to speak. Collins emphasized the need for voter turnout and the importance of the SAVE America Act to safeguard American elections.

Trump’s Criticism of Democratic Candidates

Trump also criticized Democratic Senate candidate Jon Ossoff and gubernatorial candidate Keisha Lance Bottoms, calling Bottoms an “incompetent disaster” for her policies in Atlanta. The president called Jackson a “truly great patriot” and framed the race as a critical moment for Georgia’s political future.

As the midterms approach, Trump’s strategy of leveraging high-profile athletes and public figures continues to shape the political landscape in key battleground states.
