New Jersey Governor Mikie Sherrill (D) has condemned the planned execution of the Fort Hood shooter, describing it as a deeply disrespectful act that places an undue burden on soldiers. During an appearance on MS NOW’s “The Weeknight,” Sherrill discussed the canceled plans to publicly stream the execution, emphasizing the psychological and moral weight placed on those ordered to carry out the act.
Execution Orders and Moral Burden
Sherrill highlighted the distressing nature of the orders, stating that soldiers would be told, “you’re going to go shoot this guy who’s in a wheelchair.” She expressed concern about the long-term emotional impact on those involved, noting that the burden of such an act would follow them for the rest of their lives.
“Imagine the 20-year-old, imagine, maybe, the 18-year-old, that stepped up to serve, that gets orders and says, you’re going to go shoot this guy who’s in a wheelchair,” Sherrill said. “Imagine feeling like, I don’t know what to do here.”
Justice vs. Pageantry
Despite her belief in justice, Sherrill argued that the execution was not about justice but rather about creating a form of pageantry around a traumatic event. She called it offensive to those who have served in the military, emphasizing that it lacks the dignity and respect such a moment should command.
“This is not justice. This is about trying to create some pageantry around something that should never be treated like that,” she explained. “That is disrespectful to soldiers, and that is incredibly offensive to most of us who’ve served.”
Sherrill’s comments reflect a broader debate over the ethics and implications of capital punishment, particularly in cases involving military personnel. Her criticism underscores the tension between legal procedures and the human cost of enforcing them, especially in a context that involves the military and its members.
