Popular podcaster Joe Rogan has sparked controversy by claiming that the secular left is replacing God with wokeness, even within churches. During a recent episode of his show, Rogan argued that the left’s secularist belief system is more extreme than that of the right, citing a lack of moral structure and humility.

“I have a theory about why the left is so much more loony,” Rogan said. “I think it’s because the left is secular, almost universally.” He continued, “When you think about the left, you generally don’t think about, like, Christianity or any religion, really. It’s more of like a science-based, like, ‘we’re too smart for that thing.'” Rogan criticized the left’s belief system for lacking rules and structure, such as the Ten Commandments, which he believes provide moral scaffolding.

“There’s no moral scaffolding to hold on to,” Rogan said. “I’m not saying, you know, religion is 100 percent great, but what I am saying is there’s something about having a structure like [the] Ten Commandments … where there’s rules to abide by. There’s a higher power, and then you worship, and in worshipping, there’s a humility to that, and a humbleness to that.” He further argued that wokeness is not only replacing religion but also hijacking it by injecting progressive ideas into traditional faith practices.

“Another thing that’s interesting with the religious thing when it comes to the left is there’s been this larger than normal presence of these, like, LGBT pastors and these people that are promoting a very different Christianity,” Rogan said. “They’re talking about things that, you know, biblical scholars are like, ‘Hey, wait, what page is this on? What? Where does it say abortion’s OK? Like, how are you getting to that? Where does it say God’s non-binary?'” Texas Democratic Sen.-elect James Talarico famously suggested God is non-binary during a Texas state House floor debate in 2021.

Talarico also once alleged that “God is not Christian.” Rogan continued, “You know, there’s a lot of this weirdness — that this woke weirdness that sort of entered into religion and some pastors are doing it.” He questioned whether this shift is beneficial, stating, “I don’t know if that’s good, because you’re not following the original stuff.” Bishop Robert Barron, founder of Word on Fire, agreed with Rogan, criticizing liberal Christianity for compromising its doctrinal content in favor of progressive political agendas.
