Democrat pastor Adam Hamilton, running for Senate in Kansas, faces growing controversy over remarks from 2020 that have resurfaced in recent political discourse. The video, which has drawn attention in the deep-red state, shows Hamilton calling on his congregation to recognize ‘White privilege’ and ‘repent’ during the height of the George Floyd protests.
Repentance and White Privilege Call
In the video, Hamilton said, ‘Like part of what I know is that, is that I grew up in a way that I’m blind to certain things in our society.’ He added, ‘I just am. And I have certain benefits by virtue of being educated, White, and male, right?’ Hamilton continued, ‘There are benefits and privileges to my place in life. I have to recognize that. To see that. And then I have to listen. I have to listen and understand, and finally be able to see the brokenness in myself, and my indifference.’
‘Before I can do anything to help anyone else, I have to have a conversion. I have to repent,’ he concluded.
Pedophile Accusations and Political Fallout
Hamilton, who has led the Church of the Resurrection in Leawood for over three decades, has also been accused by Republican Senator Roger Marshall of failing to report a pedophile who once worked at his church. Marshall released an ad highlighting the accusation, which states, ‘What did Hamilton do when victims reported him to church leaders? Parents were ignored, and Hamilton never called the police.’
The ad continues, ‘The next fall, Hamilton welcomed him back. Free to lurk for new victims — later convicted of more child sex crimes.’ It concludes, ‘Adam Hamilton protected a pedophile. He should never be our senator.’
Political Implications
As the race for Kansas Senate heats up, these past remarks and accusations are likely to shape the political narrative. With the state remaining a stronghold for Republicans, the controversy may serve as a hurdle for Hamilton’s campaign.
