Stephen Wagley, a Republican candidate for Louisiana’s 6th Congressional District, has accused the Democratic Party of openly embracing socialist and communist ideologies, a stark contrast to the values of previous generations. Speaking with host Matthew Boyle on Breitbart News, Wagley claimed that today’s Democrats are not only willing to label themselves as socialists or communists but are also proud of their commitment to implementing such policies.
Shift in Democratic Ideology
Wagley asserted that the party has moved far from the Democrats of his grandparents’ time and is no longer hiding its ideological leanings. He emphasized that these individuals are openly discussing and advocating for a socialist or communist ideology, which they are willing to fight for.
As evidence of this ideological shift, Wagley pointed to proposals for government-run grocery stores, an idea that New York City Mayor Zohran Mamdani has promoted. He described this as a radical concept, stating, “That’s just crazy.”
Supporting Candidates
The candidate argued that this ideological shift is already evident in the current crop of Democratic candidates running for office. He cited figures such as Abdul El-Sayed, the DSA-backed nominee who won Michigan’s Democratic Senate primary, as well as Melat Kiros and Darializa Avila Chevalier, both running for Congress in Colorado and New York respectively.
Wagley expressed a plan to ensure that such candidates do not gain power, though he declined to provide details. He stated, “We’re going to see to it that these people either don’t take office or that they leave office, because we’re not going to have that in these United States of America.”
Broader Political Trends
Wagley’s comments come as part of a broader trend among Republican candidates who are increasingly emphasizing an anti-socialist message. For example, Michigan Senate nominee Mike Rogers described El-Sayed as “very, very much that Democrat, socialist, Islamist kind of type person,” while Ohio Senator Bernie Moreno labeled him the most extreme socialist running in the midterms.
Wagley is running in a redrawn district currently held by Rep. Cleo Fields (D), one of 10 candidates in a November 3 jungle primary that is likely to head to a December 12 runoff. Early voting opened Tuesday.
