Senior figures within the Democratic Party are reportedly adjusting expectations for the upcoming midterm elections, signaling a shift in strategy as internal polling indicates a more competitive landscape than previously anticipated. This move comes as both parties face tightening races in key battleground states, with Republicans gaining ground in the Midwest and narrowing gaps in critical districts.
According to six individuals familiar with the data, the latest internal polling from both parties, released mid-October, shows GOP candidates making strides in the Midwest and tightening races in key Colorado seats. Additionally, the influx of Republican money is helping secure some vulnerable Florida seats, despite ongoing challenges in North Carolina and Texas.
Democrats on Capitol Hill are now privately cautioning some of their more optimistic colleagues that a repeat of the 2018 results, which saw a significant Democratic majority, may not be realistic. One House Democrat noted, “I don’t think anyone ever believed we were going to have 2018 numbers. I honestly think the results are going to be all over the place. Caution seems smart to me. But, optimistic is also a good place to be.”
Some Democrats also feel their internal polling may be over-indexing their strength in certain areas, according to two other operatives working on competitive races. This suggests a growing awareness that the political landscape is more unpredictable than anticipated.
If Democrats fail to secure a strong majority, the consequences could be significant, with many predicting a wave of frustration and anger among party members. The potential for blame-shifting and internal conflict is seen as a real risk.
If you think the Dems are nuts now, wait til they lose the midterms.
