Calley Means, a prominent figure in the Make America Healthy Again (MAHA) movement, has resigned from the Trump administration, citing frustration over delayed policy priorities. The resignation comes just days before the midterm elections, marking a significant setback for the movement within the White House.
Means, a senior adviser to Health Secretary Robert F. Kennedy Jr., left his role on Thursday, according to reports from The Wall Street Journal. He expressed his intent to continue advocating for the MAHA agenda, despite the challenges within the administration.
Means, 41, reportedly became greatly frustrated with the White House’s delays in advancing some of Kennedy’s most popular policy ideas. He blamed internal administration dynamics for allowing food companies and special interests to exert undue influence, as noted by sources familiar with the situation. Another individual described Means as having become disillusioned with the current state of affairs.
In a statement, Means expressed his respect for President Trump and Kennedy, thanking them for their efforts in combating the so-called ‘dark forces in DC’ that profit from sick Americans. He emphasized that significant policy and cultural changes have occurred in the past two years, with the movement still in its early stages.
Means highlighted his contributions to the administration, including his role in revising dietary guidelines and the inverted food pyramid, promoting transparency on food ingredients, and shaping the White House’s executive order on psychedelics and the voluntary phaseout of petroleum-based food dyes.
His departure follows growing concerns from MAHA supporters about the slow progress on food policy, pesticides, and vaccines. Means reportedly had disagreements with the administration over delays in defining ultra-processed foods. Prominent MAHA voice Alex Voetberg described the movement as having suffered a major blow, calling Means the ‘Godfather of the MAHA movement’ and expressing deep gratitude for his tireless efforts.
Voetberg warned that Means’ departure should raise alarms for those concerned about the future of children’s health, underscoring the significance of his role in advancing the movement’s goals.
