A Scottish museum has removed ancient Egyptian mummies from display, citing a lack of documented consent from the deceased or their descendants. Glasgow’s Kelvingrove Art Gallery and Museum posted a sign stating that staff had ‘removed human remains from this display as a mark of respect.’
Contemporary Museum Ethics and Revised Code of Ethics
Glasgow Life, a nonprofit that oversees cultural institutions in the city, said the decision reflected ‘contemporary’ museum views on displaying human remains. The statement cited the International Council of Museums’ revised Code of Ethics, published in June 2026, which emphasizes ‘upholding the inherent dignity of human remains and promoting respect for their significance.’
The draft Human Remains Policy proposed by Glasgow Life Museums states that human remains should only be displayed where there is documented and informed consent from the deceased individual or, in appropriate circumstances, their descendants. In the absence of such consent, the museum believes removing ancient Egyptian human remains from display is more respectful to the deceased individuals.
Removed Remains and Public Reaction
Alongside the remains of a priest named Nekt, the museum also removed a mummified right hand, foot, and head belonging to an unidentified male, reportedly uncovered in the Valley of the Kings in Luxor, Egypt.
During a GB News panel discussion, Will Kingston had a simpler assessment: “How absolutely insane.”
‘How absolutely insane.’
“I’ve been wondering where the woke brigade will turn to next,” he said. “Gaza, trans, climate change, it’s all running out of steam a bit, and we’ve found the next cause celebre: it’s mummies’ rights!”
“The dead can’t give consent,” one of the presenters replied.
“Nekt was unavailable for comment,” Kingston added. “How absolutely insane, and it just goes to show that this sort of stuff, there’s no lengths that they can’t go to with regard to how ludicrous this stuff is. It’s incredible.”
Even the liberal on the panel — who stipulated that he did not believe climate change was ‘woke’ — agreed that the museum’s actions were ‘just mad.’
