NFL Warns Texans Player Over Palestinian Girl’s Name on Eye Black

Houston Texans linebacker Azeez Al-Shaair was warned by an NFL official during a game against the Cincinnati Bengals to remove the name of a Palestinian girl from his eye black, or risk being sidelined from play. The incident occurred after Al-Shaair had written the name of Wafaa Akila, an 8-year-old girl killed in an Israeli airstrike in Gaza earlier this month.

The NFL official noticed the name during the game and informed Al-Shaair, who complied by removing it after being warned. He was not fined for the violation. This incident follows a previous fine of $11,942 that Al-Shaair received for wearing the name of Hind Rajab, another Palestinian girl killed in Gaza in 2024, on his eye black during a game. Israeli military investigators have opened a criminal investigation into her death.

Al-Shaair has been fined multiple times for displaying names on his eye black. During a game last season, he wore a message reading “stop the genocide.” He repeated the message while warming up for the Texans’ next playoff game but removed it before kickoff. Al-Shaair stated at the time that he had been warned he would be pulled from the game if he kept the message on.

Al-Shaair’s decision to wear Wafaa Akila’s name for a second consecutive week and the NFL’s warning during the game sparked reactions from football fans on social media. NFL rules prohibit players from displaying personal messages on their uniforms. When violations are found during a game, officials tell players to correct them; those who do not comply can be kept off the field.

Al-Shaair’s actions have drawn attention to the broader issue of players using their platform to address global conflicts, particularly in the Middle East. The NFL’s response highlights the league’s strict stance on maintaining neutrality and adhering to its uniform policy, even in the face of public sentiment and player expression.
