Oregon Governor Tina Kotek has been reelected for a second term, defeating Republican State Senator Christine Drazan in the state’s midterm election. With 75% of the votes counted, Kotek secured 51% of the total vote, amassing 795,725 votes, while Drazan received 699,400 votes, or 45%, according to the Associated Press.
Focus on Cost of Living and Economic Growth
Kotek’s campaign centered on reducing the cost of living through expanded infant and toddler child care, increased affordable housing, and down-payment assistance. She emphasized her administration’s efforts to help nearly 26,000 households stay housed, noting that Oregon led the nation in new housing starts, with a 11.3% increase.
Her platform also included opposing President Donald Trump’s tariffs and restrictions on the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which she referred to as “Trump’s price tag.” To further support economic growth, Kotek proposed establishing a new Department of Commerce to enhance Oregon’s competitiveness and private-sector partnerships.
Protecting Voting Rights and Promoting Equality
Kotek pledged to maintain Oregon’s trusted vote-by-mail system and ensure that every person can live, work, go to school, and raise a family safely and with dignity, regardless of race, ethnicity, gender, religion, or disability. She also committed to defending the LGBTQ+ community from federal attacks.
Drazan’s Plan to Address Affordability and Economic Reform
Drazan, who did not receive an endorsement from President Trump, planned to lower the cost of living through a “Day One Affordability Executive Order.” She also vowed to repeal Kotek’s Climate Protection Program, which she claimed had imposed financial burdens on working families and driven up utility and gas prices.
Drazan’s platform included vetoing new tax increases, reforming the Corporate Activity Tax (CAT), and cutting taxes by increasing Oregon’s standard deduction to reflect current cost-of-living pressures. She also prioritized affordable energy, improved natural resource management, and reducing unnecessary regulations to boost local infrastructure.
