Democrat Rebecca Bennett has secured victory in New Jersey’s 7th Congressional District race, defeating Republican incumbent Thomas H. Kean Jr., a key supporter of former President Donald Trump. Bennett’s win marks a significant shift in the district, which has historically leaned Republican. With 186,422 votes, or 57% of the total, Bennett narrowly outpaced Kean’s 135,037 votes, or 41%, according to preliminary results from the Associated Press, with 94% of votes counted.

Bennett’s Policy Priorities

Bennett, a former U.S. Navy helicopter pilot, campaigned on a platform focused on lowering the cost of living. She pledged to reduce red tape to boost housing supply and construction, while investing in clean, reliable, and domestic energy sources to cut energy costs for New Jersey residents. Her plan also included reversing Medicaid cuts, which she blamed on Kean and ‘MAGA Republicans.’ Bennett also emphasized her commitment to ‘a woman’s right to choose at the federal level.’

Shared Military Stance

Both Bennett and Kean support a strong military as a cornerstone of national security. Bennett promised to modernize military technology, prepare for cyber and drone threats, and improve oversight of military spending. Kean, who has served in Congress since 2023, focused his campaign on creating jobs and economic opportunities for the district. He promoted ‘policies that spur innovation, economic growth, and create a pro-small business environment.’

Kean’s Legislative Focus

Kean, who has been in Congress since 2023, has focused on job creation and economic growth in the 7th District. He also emphasized improving access to high-quality healthcare, having introduced several bills aimed at reducing prescription drug costs and lowering healthcare expenses for seniors. Kean also supported strong border security, asserting that ‘border security is national security,’ while advocating for the protection of children brought to the U.S. illegally.
