On Thursday’s broadcast of MS NOW’s “The Weeknight,” Oregon Democratic Rep. Janelle Bynum addressed the state’s strict gun laws in the wake of a recent shooting, emphasizing the need for stronger measures to protect children. Bynum stated, “We’ve said, very clearly, we want our babies to stop dying.”
Response to Recent Violence
Bynum highlighted Oregon’s efforts to combat interpersonal gun violence, noting the state’s implementation of Measure 114, a stringent gun law passed by referendum. The law includes a permit-to-purchase system, which Everytown, USA ranks as the 12th strongest in the nation. Despite these measures, Bynum expressed frustration over opposition to the law, stating, “We face people who don’t want to face the music, and they’re okay with our children continuing to die.”
Impact of Gun Violence
Co-host Luke Russert noted the recent mass shooting in Bend, Oregon, and the state’s ongoing struggle with gun violence. Bynum reiterated the emotional toll on parents and communities, emphasizing the need for action to protect children in public spaces. “We want people to stand up and ensure that, when our kids are out, whether they’re at the playground, whether they’re at the grocery store, whether they’re at community college, if they’re at school, that they’re not at risk for being shredded apart by gunfire,” she said.
Interpersonal Violence and Community Impact
Bynum also addressed the issue of interpersonal gun violence, noting that as a Black mother, she is acutely aware of its impact on families. She called for continued efforts to address both mass shootings and gun violence in private settings. “The interesting thing is that you have these lone shooters, but, as a black mom, I also will remind people that we have interpersonal gunfire as well,” she said.
Call for Stronger Measures
Bynum’s comments underscore the ongoing debate over gun control in Oregon, where the state has taken a firm stance on regulating firearms. While Measure 114 has been supported by many Oregon residents, it remains a target for fringe groups seeking to overturn it through legal challenges. Bynum’s remarks reflect a broader push for stronger gun laws to prevent future tragedies and protect children from gun violence.
