Beginning May 1, 2027, Washington state residents will be required to pay $126 to acquire a state-issued permit-to-purchase that allows them to buy a gun. The fee, confirmed by the Washington State Patrol (WSP), includes $90 for the permit and $36 for the fingerprint background check.
Additional Costs for Permit Applicants
Radio host Jason Rantz highlighted that applicants must also cover other expenses, such as the cost for a state-certified safety course, ammunition, range time, and travel. These additional costs, he noted, are all borne by the buyer on top of the $126 fee.
Washington’s Comprehensive Gun Control Measures
Washington is ranked No. 9 in the nation for gun control stringency by Everytown for Gun Safety, a group affiliated with Mike Bloomberg. The state has implemented a range of strict gun laws, including universal background checks for handgun purchases, a ten-day waiting period on gun sales, a concealed carry permit requirement, a red flag law, gun storage laws, an ‘assault weapons’ ban, a ‘high-capacity’ magazine ban, a bump stock ban, a registry of all handgun sales, ‘ghost gun’ regulations, and a ban on K-12 teachers being armed for classroom defense.
Context and Legal Implications
The new fee is part of a broader trend of increasing regulatory burdens on gun ownership in Washington. While the state continues to enforce stringent gun control measures, the financial barrier to gun purchase may impact gun owners and raise questions about the balance between public safety and individual rights. The state’s approach reflects a commitment to reducing gun violence and ensuring responsible gun ownership, but the additional costs could be a point of contention among advocates and residents.
