Rep. Jamie Raskin (D-MD) criticized President Donald Trump’s decision to appoint Stephen Miller as chief of staff, labeling Miller a ‘sadist’ and Trump a ‘masochist’ during an appearance on MS NOW’s ‘All In’ on Friday.
Trump’s ‘Masochist’ Choice
Raskin argued that Trump’s selection of Miller signals a troubling shift in leadership, describing the move as ‘Donald Trump unplugged.’ He emphasized that Miller, known for his controversial policies and rhetoric, has continued to promote white nationalist views, which Raskin called deeply troubling.
“What do you think the Stephen Miller announcement signals?” host Chris Hayes asked Raskin. Raskin responded by referencing a book written by journalist Jean Guerrero titled ‘Hatemonger,’ which he recommended to highlight Miller’s history as a bigot and racist.
Humiliation and Political Descent
Raskin expressed deep concern over Trump’s recent political defeat, noting it was the most humiliating landslide in American politics in over half a century. He argued that Trump’s choice of Miller, who has been denounced by his own family for his racist and white nationalist views, represents a further decline in leadership quality.
“What destroys me is that Trump has just suffered the most humiliating landslide defeat in American politics in more than a half century,” Raskin said. “And he goes to a guy to take over his staff who could not win a primary in his own family. Okay. His entire family has been denouncing him for his racism, for his white nationalism.”
Political and Ethical Concerns
Raskin concluded by stating that the situation is a ‘very troubling descent, even for Trump,’ and that Miller’s appointment is a clear example of the ‘sadist’ influence on Trump’s decisions. He suggested that Trump’s actions reflect a ‘masochist’ tendency to seek further humiliation and embarrassment.
“I would say Miller is a sadist, and Trump at this point has become a masochist because he is suffering such humiliation in the eyes of the world. And this is more humiliation and embarrassment for him,” Raskin added.
