Rep. Haley Stevens Seeks U.S. Marshal Protection Amid Death Threats
Rep. Haley Stevens requests U.S. Marshal protection after facing death threats over her endorsement of Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race.

Rep. Haley Stevens (D-MI) has sought protection from the U.S. Marshals Service following a surge in death threats linked to her unexpected endorsement of Republican Mike Rogers in Michigan’s Senate race, according to Axios. The request, confirmed by two unnamed senior Trump administration officials, comes amid growing backlash from within her own party over her decision to support Rogers over Democratic nominee Abdul El-Sayed.
Endorsement Sparks Controversy
Stevens endorsed Rogers on Sunday, a move that has drawn sharp criticism from Democrats who accuse her of betraying the party. Despite her continued support for other Democrats in Michigan and nationally, the endorsement has led to accusations of disloyalty and a perceived betrayal of her primary supporters, who had backed her against El-Sayed in a close race.
Defending Her Decision
Stevens defended her endorsement, citing longstanding concerns about El-Sayed’s stance on Israel. She noted that an ad from the outside group Rebellion PAC, which blamed American affordability issues on U.S. aid to Israel, intensified her doubts. El-Sayed rejected the ad’s claims before Stevens made her endorsement.
Escalating Tensions
Stevens also cited being told she was no longer welcome on El-Sayed’s campaign trail as the final straw. “Abdul has been getting angrier and angrier,” she told CNN’s Anderson Cooper. “I was trying to help, and I endorsed him. That ad was very painful. There are so many Democrats who want to vote for our Democratic nominee, and they’re just being told, ‘hey, this is a party you don’t belong in,’ or ‘this is a campaign you don’t belong in.’”
Security Measures Taken
The request for U.S. Marshal protection highlights the escalating tensions and public backlash she has faced. While the process for such a request is ongoing, her status as a member of Congress means her request is expected to be fulfilled. The situation underscores the polarizing nature of the Senate race and the personal risks some candidates face in a highly competitive political environment.
